10/2006 The Piedmont Players Production of the Stage Play "Doubt," Marneen Lynne Fields in the Part of Sister James, Written by John Patrick Shanley, and Directed by Chris Samuelson. Donna Andrews as Sister Aloysius.
Everyone who has seen my performance in the play "Doubt" says I was made to play the naive innocent Sister James. What I like most about the character Sister James are her idealism and her faith in prevailing goodness when all of her beliefs are being challenged, by the most awful of human circumstances in the form of Father Flynn. Does Marneen as Sister James think that Father Flynn is guilty of child molestation? No, she has her doubts. In Marneen's opinion, priests are wonderful men with more of an awareness and consciousness of spiritual repercussions than the average citizen. The facts are, a very small percentage of priests have fallen from grace to commit as grave a sin as child molestation, and the general public needs to stop condemning all for the mistakes of a few. Marneen says she is relieved that the problem has surfaced so that healing actions can now be taken and the goodness the priests are doing can prevail.
